Detroit Fire Investigation Division Training

Practical Application and Hands on Experience

This seminar is designed to give new investigators basic skills needed to conduct thorough fire origin and cause investigations and provide practical experience at actual fire scenes with the most experienced fire investigators in the state.

Week one is a forty hour seminar consisting of at least 24 hours of tested training & 16 hours of practical application.

Week two reinforces the previous week’s studies allowing the investigator to gather additional hands on experience and knowledge on more advanced subject matter relating to fire investigation.

This seminar is intended for service professionals who have a foundational understanding of fire science and familiarity with NFPA 921 and NFPA 1033.

Course Overview

Option 1 - Week 1 (April 29 - May 3, 2024)

Classroom lecture on the following subjects:

  • Legal Considerations

  • Fire Behavior

  • The Scientific Method

  • Interpreting Fire Effects and Fire Patterns

  • Documenting the Fire Scene

  • Evidence Collection

  • Determining Fire Origin and Fire Cause

  • Report Writing

Fire Scene Investigation (in field)

Fee: $700

This course is MFFTC and MCOLES registered.

Courses and field investigations are conducted by Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator Instructors of the Detroit Fire Investigation Division.

Option 2 – Week 2 (May 6 - May 10, 2024)

Classroom lectures on subjects such as:

  • Fire Investigators as expert witnesses

  • Bias in Fire Investigation

  • Electricity and Electrical systems

  • Techniques for Origin determination

  • Fundamentals of Scene Documentation

Fee: $650

Courses and field investigations are conducted by Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator Instructors of the Detroit Fire Investigation Division. 

The seminars will be held at The Detroit Public Safety Headquarters at 1301 Third Street, Detroit, MI 48226.

 

The classes will go from 8 am to 4 pm each day. 

Options 1 and 2 Fee: $1300
