Family Advocate and Management Liaison for Engagement

FAMLE Unit

The Family Advocate and Management Liaison for Engagement (FAMLE) Unit is dedicated to providing compassionate advocacy and comprehensive support to families affected by crisis and tragedy. The unit serves as a vital bridge between the Detroit Police Department and the community, offering guidance, care, and practical assistance to help families navigate some of life’s most difficult moments.

FAMLE offers a range of programs, services, and resources designed to meet the emotional, logistical, and financial needs of families impacted by homicides, critical incidents, or other traumatic experiences. The unit provides consistent, compassionate communication and ensures that no family faces these challenges alone.

In addition to its community outreach, FAMLE plays a crucial role in supporting the families of fallen Detroit Police officers, as well as officers who are critically injured or disabled in the line of duty. The team works closely with partner organizations to secure benefits, financial assistance, counseling, and long-term support, ensuring that these families receive the care and recognition they deserve.

Through its work, FAMLE embodies the department’s commitment to healing, remembrance, and resilience, standing beside families not only in times of crisis but throughout their ongoing journey toward recovery.

Fallen & Critically Injured Officers Fund

Housed within the FAMLE Unit, the Fallen & Critically Injured Officers Fund was established in 2018 to honor and support Detroit Police officers and their families in times of tragedy. The fund provides both financial assistance and ongoing emotional support to families of officers who have been killed or critically injured in the line of duty.

Through this fund, families receive help with expenses related to Police Week in Washington D.C., where fallen officers are honored on the National Memorial Wall. The committee also coordinates with the DPD Peer Support Team and national organizations to ensure families receive every benefit and resource available.

Beyond financial aid, the fund stays connected with families throughout the year—sending cards and flowers on birthdays, anniversaries, and end-of-watch dates; hosting a Christmas party for children; providing zoo and museum memberships; and organizing Back-to-School programs.

The DPSF also maintains the Fallen Officer Memorial Wall and interactive kiosk at the Detroit Public Safety Headquarters, ensuring the community can remember and pay tribute to our heroes year-round.

Through the FAMLE Unit, this fund reinforces the department’s lasting commitment to compassion, remembrance, and the continued well-being of those who have sacrificed so much for the city of Detroit.
